Every Tuesday, friday, and saturday, we got together to discuss this project which regards to the public view of using cell phone and short message services (sms) to communicate with others. In the begining, we were not familiar with each other; we just knew that we all are at the same tutorial class. However, after meeting and discussing together several times, we became more familiar. I really like the group work because when we all work together on a project but doing different things, each of us can disscuss if facing a difficulty. When we worked on our script, every one came out with different ideas which gave me a lot of joy.

For the video making, our group focuses on how the sms affects peopole's romatic relationships positively and negatively, or perhaps no effect at all. We planed to produce a news which contains a short soap drama regarding to how a new romatic relationship forms, maintains, and then finally ends. We also interviewed three students who have different perspectives about sending and receiving text messages in daily time. After the back groung research, everyone shared different but very good ideas about how the sms affects our relationships and we spent a lot of time writing the script. Finally, by March 18, we finished most parts of the script. On March 21, we had shot most parts of the video. It is so interesting that when we acted a role in public, we were so embarrassed and had a lot of NGs. After finishing video shooting and watched ourselves on the digital camera, all of us laughed and satisfied our jobs. These days, our group got together again to edit the video. We tried to add some music and sound in order to make our video more interesting. I had never tired to video editing before because I am not good at computer, therefore, I thought that I could not do it. However, trying to edit our video, I found that it is so fun to using the program of the Movie Maker on the Window XP. I am glad that have learned how to use a new technology.

It is very interesting to have this project as it is different from other communication assignments which require students to write 6-12 pages of research papers and they do not require a group project. After joined the project, I have learned a lot from and our group have tried our best to do the assignmnet. Hopefully, we can get a good grade !

The reflection of the blog

I have posted 10 regular diaries which talked about an online chatting system--the MSN. Honestly, I am not good at computer so in the begining of the semester, I didn't really think about the advantage of the personal blog. I thought it was so annoying that I had to post a journal regarding to my everyday experience about the social software every week as I did not used to write diaries. However, concening about the grade, I started to do some researches about the MSN. I paied attention on the lectures and on the tutorial class. Whenever I heard and learned the theory and critique from other scholars or from Smith about the social software, I would think how they could be related to my topic, and then post a journal on my bolg. Carefully observing how others feel and use the MSN, I also received some ideas about the MSN.

After posting journals, I found that I seemed to already get used to post a journal on the bolg every week. I feel that the blog is not annoying, it actually motivates me to have a desire understanding a social software. I also found that my knowledge about the MSN is vey limited. The MSN is not only convenient for people to communicate with each other, but also existing deep relationships regarding to the society. If I did not need to response to post regular diaries on the blog, I would not be able to find that a social softwear could be so interesting. Now, I really enjoy writing the blog. I think that even though the semester is about to finiah, I will keep posting journals on my blog. Maybe in the future, I can look back what I have learned in this semester. This is like the self-surveillance as according to the lecture on the week 8, Smith (February, 1, 2005) states that people are watching themselves when they use a technology such as webcam, blog, personal websites, etc. He also said that "self-surveillance is the fad of the day." when I am interested in the blog, I am really enjoy posting diaires weekly. It is just like the photos; people usually recall their past experiences and life by seeing pictures. Same as the bolg, when I keep posting dairies, in the future, I can watch myself and know what I have done at this moment.

Reference,

Smith, R (February, 1, 2005). I found that there are some interesting phenomena. Few dacades ago, there were issues of the racism and class, which affected peopole to form different communities. For example, how many time have we seen from movies that many years ago, blacks were discriminated by whites, and balcks were viewed as slaves destined to work for whites? Nowadays, people who are in higher social status usually get together such as doctors and lawyers, and create a social community. It rarely sees that higher class people stay in the same community with the lower class people. The personal identity in different communities seemed not having an equal status. Moreover, in real life, people usually involve face-to-face communications. Some people may judge an individual's apparent for the first sight, and then decide whether inviting him/her to their communities. Therefore, the real life community exists gaps.

With the improvment of the computer technology and Internet service, many of us are able to creat a virtual community. When I use the MSN to chat with others, I creat an online community. Without the face-to-face communication, the online community is more equal and free. As people communicate on the MSN, they can have multi-identies.Therefore, racism no longer exists, and different class people are able to stay in the same community as well as creat new relationships. Using the MSN, it also can reduce the judgement of a person's apparent and avoide some embarrassing moments in face-to-face communication. Smith (March, 15, 2005) also states that the online community is more direct, provides more freedom for human identies, and gives options for participants when they face different situations. The high speed of the Internet reduces the problem of distance communication and allows people to create a global community.

Reference,

Smith, R. Personality Disorder

I read an article this afternoon, which regards to the psychological disorder like depression when people spend too much time using computers and the Internet communications such as the MSN. With the rapid improvment of the computer and Internet service, more and more people devote their whole time to involving and develpoing online relationships. Accourding to the lecture on the week 9, Smith (March, 8, 2005) states that online relationship is good at the capacity for people to have easy intimacy as well as projection and enable them to escape the face-to-face communication. However, the online relationship is also bad at its losing touch with the reality and if people spend too much time working on it, they will become additive and cause multiple personality disorder. Although the MSN is convenient in converying instant messages and overcoming the problem of distance communication, it's negative effect is isolate peopole from the real world interaction.

The article I read also points out that base on the idea of the individualism in the western society, more and more people seeking the individual world and privacy of the electronic communication since people tend to live alone after 19. When people stay at home alone, they tend to spend most of their time using the compouters and Internet communications. Due to lack of the face-to-face communication and interpersonal touthes in a real world community, more and more pepole suffer from the depression (Lasn and Bruce, 2000). Moreover, Lasn and Bruce (2000) quote a note from the "New York Time" that "when you spend your time on the Internet, you don't hear a human voice and you never get a hug." Moreover, they point out that "an online 'community' can't possibly substitute for a real community, because the essential things that makes a community a community are absent." Indulging themselves in the electronic world, people will become anxious and escape or isolate themselves from the real world communication, further will cause the depression.

Reference,

Simth, R (March, 8, 2005). G

I heart a news from my friend in Taiwan recently, that there is a wide spread MSN messenger worm called Bropia. G ( the picture is shown below); and many of her firends had been struggling with it. The annoying worm tries to infect from one computer to other when people use the MSN to chat with othes. As the MSN is a popular copmmunication medium, the speed of the infection is very broad and quick. For example, Trend Micro statistic shows that about 87.9% of infection is from Asia including 60.8% from Taiwan; however, more and more people also receive the worm in the U.S. Bropia can change the status of the MSN users such as "online to away." Be cause of this, many people lose connection with others. When the person A chats with the person B, B may receive a file called "new_webcam pif (185 KB)" from A. If the person B carelessly opens the file, Bropia will display the sexy picture below to bother the users and change their ststus (Johnstone, 2005).

While Bropia does not seriously affect computer users and destroy the computer program, the online security should also be considered. According to the lecture from the week 9, computer users can use some programs such as McAffee's VirusInfo Centre, which provides virus scanning, personal firewall plus, and server side sacnning to fight against virus. However, to have a higher security to chat online, people should be cautious not opening a strange file and giving others the personal information.

Reference

Johnstone, B. I have been using the program for few years. From the MSN 6.0 to the 7.0 beta test, the MSN has continuously improved its program and provided better service to serve the users. For me, the MSN enables me, on some degree, to keep in touch with my friends and family. From the very begining, there were only 8 people in my address book, but now, I already have 50 people. I don not talk to these 50 people at the same time, but as long as I want to talk to some of them and if they are online, I can immediately communicate and maintain our relationship.

However, even though the MSN is convenient for people to interact with each other through the Internet, for those who do not use the MSN like my parents, I only can keep in touch with them through the telephone. I feel that the online relationship tends to be shallow; for example, people tend to transmit simple and short messages to discuss with others on MSN. Although they can talk for a long time, they can not invlove the real face-to-face communication and they have limitation to express their true emotions online as the computer can not tell the person's really feeling. Moreover, Rowland (1999) points out that the computer can not feel a person's pain and love, it is not conscious; however, consciousness only exists in hunman. Only human can tell others their emotions. Comparing the online chatting and real face-to-face communication, I still prefer the real face-to-face communication.

Reference,

Rowland, W. (1999). When she was using the MSN chatting with her friend, another person, supposed to be a guy, added her name and wanted to talk to Anne. Anne thought that was one of her unfamiliar firends so she accepted and talked to him. However, the guy started to show some porns and talked about some dirty words to Anne. She eventaully knew that the guy was not her friend but did not know and foncused how the guy got her msn address.
After hearing Anne's story, I started to think aboout the issue of the online safety. More and more people use the MSN chatting with friends and getting some information. However, how many peopele know that the person they are talking to are exactually the peson they know in person since the MSN does not require people to use their real name. Hence, according to the MSN's website, http://www.msn.staysafeonline.com/, it teaches us how to stay safely when chatting with firends or families online:

1. Do not share your personal information such as phone numbers, addresses, credit card
numbers, or photos with the person you do not know; Keep your information in private.
2. When you feel comfortable for the cahtting content or the Internet screen, log out or turn off
the computer.
3. Do not meet the person who you do not know in operson.
4. Download the program of anti-virus software on your computer.
5. when you are chatting with a friend, let the third person join your chatting activities.
6. Keep in mine that not everyone on the MSN is who they said they are.

According to the lecture, when people use the tchnologies, they are also spied by others(Smith, January, 25, 2005). Many of us do not know how to avoid strangers when they talk to us as they know how to get our MSN addresses. We are spied since the MSN undermines our freedom. Hence, poeple should be careful and consider issue of online safety when using the MSN (Smith, January, 25, 2005).

Reference

Smith, R. As the MSN 7.0 is still progressing, it just offers the beta test. The MSN 7.0 remians all functions of the MSN 6.2 such as the signs of the offline, busy, away, and online messages; which are favorable for people to notice the states of others. For example, if my friend's sign shows "offline", instead of waiting for her, I can switch to talk to others who are online. Moreover, I can show the sign of "away" in order to avoid talking to someone who I do not want. Both the MSN 6.2 and 7.0 provide some silly cartoons to vivify coversations as well as emotions, and they offer online photo sharing. By using the webcams, users are able to see each other online, even though some webcams are not clear enough to transmit the images. However, if two people use different MSN programs; for instance, one uses the MSN 7.0 and the other uses the MSN 6.2, they can not use the webcam as the MSN 7.0 does not accept MSN 6.2 in some degree.

The MSN has become useful and popular seems obvious. Peole frequently use it to chat with others. With upgrade program of the MSN 7.0 which provides more advanced functions for users to animate thier interactions. For example, the MSN 7.0 adds functions of winks, nudge, download packs, games, activities, and deluxe display pictures. Firstly, users can express their emotions by sending kisses, hearts, and some cartoons to others by using "winks". Secondly, by sending the "nudge", the MSN window, both our own and the person who we are contacing, will "shake". Thirdly, because the MSN 7.0 beta test does not yet offer the function of "download pack", once it is available, users can use it to catch emotions, winks, display pictures, and setting background from the MSN. Fourthly, if users are memners of Instant Games Clubhouse member, the MSN 7.0 offers online games for them such as chess club, bankshot billiards club. Fifthly, using "activities", users are able to share some information suchas files, photos, and calendars. Finally, "deluxe display pictures" will be able to vivify display pictures even thouth the MSN 7.0 bets test does not yet offer this grogram (Warren 2004).

Although the MSN 7.0 offers more updated programs to serve users; however, in some degree, the MSN 6.2 and MSN 7.0 can not use together. If the person A is useing MSN 7.0 and the person B is using MSN 6.2, when the person A sends the "nudge" to the person B, then the person B can not reveive the information. In this circumsatnce, only the person A's MSN window will "shark". Therefore, in order to use the updated functions of the MSN7.0 to animate online conversations, it requires users to use the MSN 7.0

Reference

Warren Tom. Before using the MSN, my cousin liked to use the telephone. Every time he used, he would spend at least 2 hours chatting with his friends since he does not like face-to-face communication. However, the annoying thing that caused him not able to chat with his friends frequently was that spending long time using the telephone would result a expensive payment. Fortualtely, by the invention of the MSN, he found that the online chatting system faciliates him to maintain communication and social interactions with his friends. Also, since the MSN is free, he even can invite several people to join the discussion group; whereas the telephone can not do that. Therefore, MSN satisfies my cousin's needs and sloves his problem of pay lots of expensive phone bills; and it is obvious viewed as positive.

However, when I saw my couisn sitting on the chair and using the MSN to chat with his friend for a long time, I started to worry about the negative impact of the MSN. Also according to the lecture (Smith, January, 18, 2005), the negative perspective of the instrumentalist is that technologies are sometimes viewed as negative social outcomes. When my couisn spent long time on the MSN, he participated less outdoor activities and social interaction with others in real life; as a result, he becomes even shyer and have difficulity using face-to-face communication. He also can not magange his time well in doing school works because the simulate life on the MSN seems more vivid. Therefore, the MSN should be regulated. The current MSN system does not set any limitation for peopele who want to use the system so everyone can use it. In my opinion, perhaps setting a regulation that only allows people to use the system when they reach the age of 19 or older can reduce the negative impact on young people since they have less abilities to control themselves for time management; also young age people should participate more outdoor activities in order to learn social interactions with others.

Reference,

Smith, R. It took so long!! I sometimes doubted that my letter was lost or perhaps the postman put it into a wrong mail box. Anyhow, I got it now, thanks the postman!!

When I read the letter, a very amazing feeling welled up to me, and it made my heart felt so warm. (I do not have this kind of feeling even though I frequently chat with this friend through the MSN.) Seeing my friend's handwriting which I cherished the memory of, I immediately recalled our vivid life in senior high school. I finally found that we are so important to and have never forgotten about each other. This is actually the real feeling that I am looking for. I am glad that I got it from my friend's letter.

Befor receiving this letter, I did not like to write a letter since the e-mail and the MSN were so convenient to me; I could send messages to and receive them from my friends quickly. Also, Rowland (1999) points out that "mail was nowhere else nearly so rapidly or efficient, but despite the fact that it was not uncommon for an international letter to take half a year to reach it distination." I think that is why less and less people prefer to write letters. Although it sometimes takes a long time, letter itself represents many things that the MSN system is hard to come by. For instance, letter represents the intimate relationships with others such as families, friends, or lovers. By reading letters, people can recall thier memories in the past, and feelings that are hid in people's hearts will come out, no matter positive or negative, just like me. Letters represents more reality.

I take it for granted that the MSN system indeed fixes the problem of waiting messages through space, but it has less ability representing the reality. Moreover, according to the lecture, Smith (January, 18, 2005) states that some people criticize that the technology may bring negative social outcomes such as someone may feels annoying to receive unwanted messgaes. I agree since we just use computers and type letters on the keyboards to chat with others; therefore, sometimes we are even not sure that the people we are talking to through MSN is acutally those people we know. When writing messages, people who use the MSN involve less emotion than those who write letters in the paper. If a peson receives a hand- writing letter, s/he will think more that s/he is being cared by others; s/he may be able to maintain a longer intimate relationship with others.

Reference

Smith, R. It has become popular and will continuously attract people in social interaction in the future. As the MSN enables pepople to send and receive messages online through computers back and forth, it is considered as a two-way communication system. According to the lecture last week, in order to use the technology, users need to have ability to operate computers. Moreover, the new media such as the MSN facilitates interactivity so that people use it to communicate and get information form others. As it is a popular system, it forms a very interesting phenomena that is when people just get to know each other, they are likely to exchange their MSN addresses. It seems that everyone uses this system. This also happened to me on the first day of the tutorial class. When I joined my group discussion about the communication function for a nail, students in my group started to exchange MSN addresses.

In the MSN, however, the senders and the receivers must share something in common. For example, by useing the MSN, they must understand the languages and words that involve in their convensations. Also according to the lecture, Smith (January, 11, 2005) talked about the relationship between the information and knowledge. Using the MSN, the users need to have knowledge to comprehend the meaning of the messages or they will just become information. When I just started to use the MSN to chat with my friend, I had a difficulty understanding some words she used. For instance, she used the word "cuz", but I did not know its meaning so that the word for me was just an information. After asking its meaning, I learned that it was actually the abbreviation of the word "because"; therefore, I gained the knowledge. After being familiar with the words she used, we immediately improved our communication through MSN.

Reference

Smith, R. I have just been accepted for SFU 2005 spring semester. I choose Communication as my major because I am planning working in a TV station after I graduste from the university. I used to work in a model agency as a manager for few years in Taiwan. Durning working in Taiwan, I had great experiences contacting with the mass media such as TV stations and advertising agiencies since TV commericals and advertising frequently need models to promote the products and transmit information to the audiences. I am interested in how mass media communicates with people and how poeple use it to interact with each other. The reason why I am taking CMNS 253 is because I want to learn how the technolong such as the computer affects our life, how the Internet provides convenience to finding information, and how the e-mail faciliates communication with others. I found that the Internet not only saves my time doing research for my course assignments and getting information, but also allow me to contact with my family and friends in Taiwan by using the MSN and e-mail.

1. According to my understanding, the professor has two dogs. I have never had a pet since raising pets require a lot of time of caring and money. Once I have to travel, I have to find someone to take care of them. Pets such as dogs, usually need a large space for them to doinjg activities. However, living in an apartment, the rule does not allow people to have pets. In addition, when pets get sick, I have to spend a lot of money taking them to a veterinarian. Therefore, I choose not to have pets.

2. The elive system does not work for me now. I would use the system to listen to the lecture and reviwe the lecture if the system worked. I think that the elive system is useful since it lets students understand more about the lecture after class. Once students miss the lecture, they can have another chance to review it.

3. I am using the social software; for example, I usually use the MNS to discuss course subjects and chat with my friends. Being an international students, it is sometimes hard to keep contact with friends in my country. Using the MSN, it provides convenience to me to communicate with my friends. Also, I frequently share photos online with my friends because they can know my life in Canada. I do not have a personal blog since I am not good at computer. However, I regularly check and use my e-mail everyweek. I do not like online discussing groups since I cannot type fast. Moreover, I do not use "introducer system" as I sometimes do not trust people who I meet online.

4.I have a moblie phone and I usually bring it everyday when I go to class. I have a $30 plan covering up to 75 text messages per month. I regularly send text messages to and receive them from my friends in U.S. As long distance calls charge a lot of money, sending text messages allow me to save more money. My mobil phone does not have picture taking ability because it is an old model; therefore, I prefer taking pictutes by using caremas rather than a mobil phone.

5.I do not think that I am a geek. What I need for the computer is just providing the advantage for me to do school works, communicating with people, and finding some information.
